P7 Pupils Star in C2k Newsdesk World Book Day Video

Our day filming with Newsdesk by Noah Schiess

Wonder is about a boy called August Pullman who has a facial difference and since Christmas we have been reading it as our P7 class novel. We loved it so much that, when asked by Newsdesk to create a piece for World Book Day, Wonder was our obvious choice.

So where did we start? Firstly, we all had to write about different aspects of this book. My role was to write three monologues for different characters in the book. When everyone was finished their work, we came together, shared what we had written and gave each other constructive criticism. Then, boom, the script came together!

We spent the last week rehearsing for it and today (Thursday 9th February) we finally recorded it. In the actual recording I had to perform a monologue for the character "Jack Will", I wore a baseball cap and sat sideways on the chair to help me get into character. When the film crew arrived, we were ecstatic! They looked so professional, with their amazing camera, top-of-the-chain microphone, and a really kind crew! The crew asked to see what we had prepared, and then it was lights, camera, action! I was amongst the first of those to be filmed and I was pretty much petrified especially as I was the last person to deliver my monologue.  Everyone was sitting on the table opposite me, looking at me, with pity in their eyes  (NB It was not actually pity, I was just imagining things I was so scared) and it was hard not to look back. Instead I had to keep my eyes fixed on the camera. I managed to do this on the second take, although I almost failed as nerves nearly made me laugh. I also found what I was saying amusing as I had to insult my friend Callum, who was playing the character of Julian, who was a really mean bully. During these lines Callum (AKA Julian) would make a fake tear and pretend to be sad.  This had me on the verge of bursting out laughing but luckily I was able to keep it together.

Creating a real film was an awesome (and challenging) experience.  I am so glad we had to opportunity to do this and I cannot wait to see the final product on World Book Day.  Our entire year group went outside to film the big finale which finished with the line 'Wonder is wonderful'.  I think being involved in making this Newsdesk movie was pretty 'WONDERFUL' too!
